Turning a manual, sales-rep-led onboarding process into a self-serve flow, built from scratch as a new platform for a global supply-chain SaaS company.
The platform connects large brands with their downstream customers and resellers so supply-chain data (sales, inventory, forecasts) flows back automatically. Getting a new customer connected required a real person.
A brand would hand a customer off to a sales rep. The rep spent hours on calls and emails helping that customer pick a transmission method (email, SFTP or integration) and get their data formatted correctly. Revenue from lower-value accounts didn't offset that cost.
The platform emails the customer directly on the brand's behalf; the address is already known from the brand relationship. One click, set a password, and the customer is self-onboarding. Reps become a fallback, not the default.
This was a brand-new platform, not an assembly of existing pre-built modules. The flow went through several structural pivots before landing.
Transmission mode was originally step one. I moved it to last.
The real hurdle is getting the correct file uploaded in the right format, and this audience isn't highly technical. Leading with a transmission-mode choice risked breaking the flow's momentum if upload problems surfaced afterward. Solve the hardest problem first, then let the rest follow.

No hard metrics captured yet; the impact here is described qualitatively.
Sales-rep time is now a fallback, not a default cost of every new connection, freeing that time for higher-value accounts instead of manual onboarding walkthroughs.
A self-serve flow that feels like signing up for any consumer product, instead of a multi-call, multi-email process to get started.
